One of the reasons why Eugene Onegin seems such an indestructible piece is the obvious quality of the libretto. What captivated Tchaikovsky was the simplicity of a failed love, of missed opportunities and the absurd tragic fact of a wasted life. Few in the audience will have never had to deal with a painful rejection as a perpetrator or as a victim, and it is precisely for this reason that we can identify so well with both Tatyana and Onegin.
