The cowbells are real, the intrusive bird sounds are not. Richard Strauss could, in his own words, distinguish a knife from a fork through his tonal language. Eine Alpensinfonie (1915), his last great symphonic poem, was a tremendous challenge for his mimetic skills. Today it is primarily a challenge for any orchestra.
