Maskarade is easily Carl Nielsen's most popular composition, and even the most beloved Danish opera ever written. Alex Ross calls Carl Nielsen the most underrated composer of the 20th century. Aage Haugland once told the newspaper De Morgen: “It is all as typically Danish as Rosenkavalier is typically Viennese. We Danes naturally think that the music of Carl Nielsen is equally universal.” Anne-Marie Reynolds believes that the work is every bit as good as Le Nozze di Figaro, Falstaff or Der Rosenkavalier. What nonsense!
